Rich May Gains Global Reach in Joining International Alliance of Law Firms
Rich May has recently been elected and admitted as a member of the
International Alliance of Law Firms (formerly known as the
International Association of Commercial Lawyers). At the beginning of
June, Rich May was invited to attend the Alliance’s annual general
meeting held this year in Zurich, Switzerland, in anticipation of the
firm’s participation in the Alliance. Tom Bilodeau, a Rich May
Shareholder, represented the firm in Zurich and actively participated
in the meeting and conferences.
As Rich May’s clients have New England, national and international
operations, joining an international alliance is a natural development.
The Alliance consists exclusively of business-oriented law firms with a
reputation for excellence in their local jurisdictions which do not
belong to a competing association or organization. The common aim of
the Member firms is to combine positive legal advice with sound
commercial judgment and litigation expertise when required. Rich May
looks forward to closely working with law firms in the network to
assist its current clients with operations and investments in France,
England, Germany, South Africa, Ireland, the British Virgin Islands,
Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Japan, India, China, Russia, Hong Kong,
Canada and Bermuda. The Alliance Members will be referring clients to
Rich May with legal challenges and business opportunities in Boston and
throughout Massachusetts as well as areas where Rich May attorneys have
specialized U.S. law expertise or strategic recourses.
Rich May attorney and Managing Director, Eric Krathwohl, stated that
“Rich May is honored to become an active member of this fine
organization of top-flight law firms in 37 countries. This association
will further supplement Rich May’s capabilities to assist its clients
in their endeavors throughout North America and overseas.”
About the International Alliance of Law Firms
The Alliance is a prestigious international network of select,
business-oriented law firms whose purpose is to enable members of the
Alliance to provide their clients with global legal services from other
Alliance members. The common aim of the Member firms is to combine
positive legal advice with sound commercial judgment and litigation
expertise when required. Each Alliance Member firm seeks to provide
clients with a swift and effective response to the challenges of
international business requirements.
With globalization comes the need to have access to legal expertise at
an international level, and the Alliance now offers representation in
many major geographical areas of the world. Through their association
with the Alliance, member firms – which are typically first ranking
medium-sized firms – are able to remain independent and maintain a
strong position in the legal marketplace.
The Alliance has grown rapidly since it was formed in 1990. As of May
2006, there are 52 firms in 37 jurisdictions. All the Alliance Member
firms have undergone a selection procedure so that they are expected to
provide their clients:
• professional excellence
• the highest standard of ethics
• timeliness
• service strength
• practical solutions
• knowledge of local business culture
Firms seeking membership undergo a selection procedure with the aim
of ensuring the quality of Member firms. This means that they can
respond promptly to requests for advice and assistance so a client’s
needs can be met quickly and efficiently – on an informal or formal
basis.
Local representation in a foreign jurisdiction offers many advantages.
If a company is expanding into a foreign market, an the Alliance Member
firm should be able to assist with commercial negotiations, help locate
suitable premises, examine the most tax effective structures, source
grants and incentives available and arrange meetings with local
authorities and other professionals. All Member firms can work in the
English language and have a wealth of local knowledge.
Member firms understand that the problems facing businesses change
continuously as new legislation is passed in different countries. The
Alliance Member firms are committed to delivering an integrated
solution to the most complex problems and have developed quick and
efficient lines of communication with each other in order to enhance
the service offered to clients. The Alliance holds an Annual Meeting,
as well as Regional meetings, as a result of which Members get to know
each other and respect each other as colleagues. Rich May Shareholder
represented the firm at the 2006 Annual Meeting.
Each Member of the Alliance is an independent law firm and it (and not
the International Alliance of Law Firms) is responsible for the work
which it carries out.
