Rich May Client, Cymfony, Spins off Janya to Deliver Advanced Information Discovery Solutions for the Government.

Rich May client, Cymfony, a leading market intelligence and media analysis company, recently announced it has spun off its government services business as a new company, Janya, Inc. Rich May represented Cymfony in the transaction. The new company provides information extraction (IE) and natural language processing (NLP) solutions for information discovery from unstructured data. Janya’s technology is based on a license of Cymfony’s core information extraction platform, InfoXtract. The new company will focus on development of advanced text analysis solutions for the United States government, especially the intelligence community and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Janya will leverage the InfoXtract IE platform in offering products and services to government customers. InfoXtract supports the automatic analysis of large volumes of text documents in order to detect entities of interest, key attributes, and actions involving them. The technology development has been funded since 1997 through private venture investment and contracts totaling over $9 million from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Rome, NY and the Office of Naval Research, illustrating the DoD’s need for this advanced capability. Janya will continue to advance the state-of-the-art information extraction, especially in machine learning techniques for automatically adapting to new domains. InfoXtract has been integrated into diverse applications such as situation awareness systems for the DoD, as well as Cymfony’s Dashboard application for consumer brand monitoring.

“While information extraction technology continues to evolve, it has already demonstrated its value to unstructured data management by enhancing search and making tools such as visualization text aware,” said Dr. Rohini Srihari, CEO of Janya. Dr. Srihari was previously the chief scientist at Cymfony, a company she founded; she is also a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

“The spin-off allows Cymfony to sharpen our focus on the rapidly growing commercial business, while Janya answers the special needs of the vital government and intelligence agency business, such as security clearance and separate technology requirements,” said Andrew Bernstein, CEO of Cymfony. “Cymfony is dedicated to providing Fortune 1000 companies the most comprehensive traditional and consumer-generated media analytics products and professional services available.”
